    2026 VIRGINIA TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS 

    The Virginia Trucking Association is excited to announce the 2027 Virginia Truck Driving Championships (TDC), the premier event celebrating the skill and safety of Virginia's professional truck drivers.

    This year's competition will be held at Richard Bland College in Petersburg on June 11th - 13th, 2026.​

    Friday, June 12:
    9:00 a.m. – Registration opens at Richard Bland College
    10:00 a.m. – Written tests commence
    11:00 a.m. – Pre-trip inspections and field tests begin
    6:00 p.m. – BBQ dinner at Keystone Truck & Tractor Museum in Colonial Heights​

    Saturday, June 13:
    9:00 a.m. – Field tests resume
    Afternoon – Awards ceremony following the conclusion of competitions​


    Competition Details

    Drivers will compete in various classes, demonstrating their knowledge of regulations, vehicle inspection skills, and driving abilities. Awards will be presented to the top performers in each class, including the overall Grand Champion. Additional honors include the highest scoring first-time competitor and the winner of the pre-trip inspection contest.​


    How to Participate

    Participation is open to drivers employed by VTA-member companies who meet the following criteria:​

    • Accident-free (preventable and non-preventable) from June 11th, 2025, to June 13th, 2026.
    • Full-time truck driver for the past year with the entering employer.
    • Resident of Virginia or based at a Virginia terminal
    • Possess the proper CDL endorsement if competing in specific classes​.

    To register, complete the Driver Entry form and submit it along with the Entry Kit Request form to Dale Bennett at dbennett@vatrucking.org or Patrick Laurence at plaurence@vatrucking.org. 

    Please ensure all fees are paid before the close of business on May 15th, 2026.


    Volunteer Opportunities
    Volunteers are essential to the success of the Championships. If you're interested in contributing your time as a judge, scorekeeper, or in another capacity, please complete the Judges form by May 15th, 2026.​


    BBQ Dinner Details
    The BBQ dinner will be held at the Keystone Truck & Tractor Museum in Colonial Heights. One BBQ ticket is included with each driver's registration. Additional tickets are available for $45 each, or $10 for children ages 12 and under. All BBQ orders must be received and paid in full by May 15th, 2026.

    While the VTA has not reserved a block of rooms, the following hotels are within a 15-minute radius of the event:​

    We recommend booking accommodations early due to high demand.​

    This 2-day course introduces skills and knowledge you’ll need to investigate collisions with the goal of preventing future incidents. You will learn how to plan your company’s loss response, collect and interpret data on scene and away from the crash site, create scene sketches and verify incident reports, interview drivers and witnesses, and responsibly store the information you’ve collected.

    • Fundamentals of Collision Investigation: A brief overview of the who, what, and why of collision investigation.
    • Loss Response Plans: How to create and implement a comprehensive loss response plan for your organization.
    • Internal Data Collection and Retention: Guidelines for data collection and retention to obtain consistent information and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
    • On-Scene Data Collection: Collecting information at the site of the collision, including photographing the scene and interpreting tire marks.
    • Scene Diagrams, Measurements, and Calculations: Creating scene sketches, taking measurements, and using the traffic template and other calculations to check the validity of information provided or discern information not previously available.
    • Interview Techniques: Guidelines for collecting data by interviewing drivers, witnesses, and others whose input may help determine what happened in the collision and how to prevent future crashes.
    • Video Review: How you can use video to get a better understanding of the events of a collision.
    • Fundamentals of Collision Investigation: How to dig deeper into the information you have collected to find the root cause of a collision.
    • Review: A quick review of course resources, reinforcing the main points discussed over the past two days.

    This course is the only required course for the Certified Supervisor of
    Maintenance/Equipment (CSM/E)
    and one of two required courses for
    the Certified Director of Maintenance/Equipment (CDM/E) designation.

    Course Benefits:

    1. Learn to schedule work effectively;
    2. Learn effective information management and use of computer technology in maintenance;
    3. Develop supervision skills to motivate technicians;
    4. Learn essential preventive maintenance skills;

    Course Description: The program covers topics essential to effective management and administration of fleet maintenance operations.  Students learn how to cut costs through efficient use of personnel, equipment, and technology, while complying with government regulations affecting maintenance operations. 

    • Introduction to Fleet Management: purpose and fundamentals of fleet maintenance management, the role of the fleet maintenance manager, and the skill sets and personality traits that help a manager succeed.
    • Maintenance and Repair Strategies: the main categories of maintenance, the benefits of planned maintenance, and legal requirements for maintaining vehicles; the three types of planned maintenance; unplanned repairs and failure analysis.
    • Maintenance Technology: Issues to consider when implementing fleet maintenance software in your shop.  Overview of Vehicle Maintenance Reporting Standards (VMRS) and asset codes.
    • Laws and Regs: regulations shop managers need to know, including key Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, as well as the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Out-of-Service Criteria.
    • Budgeting: developing a maintenance department budget, different categories of expenses, and determining cost-per-mile or cost-per-hour.
    • Human Resources: Hiring effectively, complying with labor laws, and evaluating and coaching for performance improvement.
    • Training:  benefits of training, identifying training needs, implementing effective training programs, evaluating training quality, and tracking employee training progress.
    • Specifications and Purchasing: the process of determining what your fleet needs, then bidding out and purchasing the needed equipment.
    • Warranty: the importance of warrantees and how to make the most of them.
    • Shop Operations: maximizing staff operations, including staff and equipment utilization, productivity and performance management.
    • Shop Audits: the process of auditing your shop operations and practices.
    • Shop Design: important considerations for designing and building a fleet maintenance facility;  shop design best practices; and fuel station planning.

    Course Description: Hazardous Materials Training is a 2-day seminar which centers on regulatory training.  The unique, function-specific format provides greater understanding and better retention.  The seminar helps fulfill the 49 CFR Part 172 Subpart H recurrent training requirements.

    Course Benefits: Through this course, you’ll learn to:

    1. Use the hazmat table and identify hazmat classes;
    2. Mark bulk and non-bulk packaging and packages;
    3. Label and placard and prepare shipping papers;
    4. Properly load and unload vehicles; and
    5. Prepare your drivers for a roadside inspection.

    Who should attend? Anyone involved in hazardous materials preparation and transportation, including:

    • Fleet safety professionals
    • Drivers
    • Dockworkers
    • Billing clerks

    Every employee involved in shipping, transporting or handling hazardous materials should receive training. The training must be updated whenever there is a regulation change affecting an employee’s job tasks.  Hazardous materials training must be repeated at least every 36 months.
